Principal Engineer

Jim has over 40 years experience in the specialty field of automation and process control engineering in a wide range of industries, including chemical, plastics, food, consumer products, steel, nuclear, microelectronics, and pulp & paper. His experience includes both batch and continuous production plants and control. He has held various positions, including automation department head and vice president/general manager, in manufacturing and engineering companies from small to large. Responsibilities, in addition to process control system and automation conceptualization and implementation, have included project management, administrative, business development, profit & loss and best practices and procedures. 

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and a licensed professional engineer, Jim  has been an instructor in instrumentation and controls for over 25 years and was the Education Chairman for the ISA Pittsburgh Section for over 20 years. Jim is an instructor and course editor for the International Society of Automation (ISA, Research Triangle Park, NC), serves on the ISA Standards and Practices Board, volunteers on ISA standards committees (chairman of ISA105 Loop Check, FAT, SAT, Calibration committee and member of ISA5.1 Instrumentation Symbols, ISA5.7 P&ID and ISA20 Instrument Specifications committees), and serves as ISA’s liaison to the IEC SC65E WG2 developing standards on electronic exchange of instrument and electrical device information and to PROLIST International. 

Jim also develops custom training courses for manufacturing and engineering companies. Recognized both for his in-depth knowledge of measurement, control and automation and his ability to clearly explain concepts to and share his experience with students, Jim has passed knowledge on to thousands of students over the years. Jim has written articles for technical publications and was a contributor to the book Instrumentation Reliability Manual, published by Materials Technology Institute, Inc. (ISBN 978-1-57698-047-7).
